I do love a bit of Disney schmaltz. Put it together with a large chunk of my childhood and you’ve got yourself a winner. I’ve seen plenty of reviews singing this films praises so was worried it might have been built up too much. I’m happy to report however that I’m being boring and adding my voice to that same chorus of praise.
It would be very easy to pull us all in by saying ‘look Sonic!, ‘look Bowser!’. But it’s all been treated with such care and affection for the source that you can’t look at it cynically. The people working on this film clearly love these characters as much as I do. I did spend a lot of the film looking out for in jokes and cameos, and was pleasantly surprised. I’ll let you find them out for yourself though.
Wreck It-Ralph also has a great soundtrack. It’s not often I leave the cinema humming a tune or getting really into the credits music. Add that to the cracking voice cast, great animation (something I think we take for granted now), plus a nice spin on the usual hero and princess, and you’ve got a great film.
We were sat in a screen with plenty of kids, and they all seemed to really enjoy it. Just a shame they weren’t old enough to get all the references!
