Christian Bale rarely does anything average. American Psycho, The Dark Knight, Equilibrium; very good or at least very different.
Reign of Fire is an odd one by comparison. It’s possibly his most average film.
Strangely, despite the film containing dragons and a crazed, tattooed, pre-renaissance McConaughey, there’s nothing special about it. Everyone seems committed, with Bale bringing his usual intensity, and the dragons look decent. But unlike the dragons, nothing really lights up proceedings.
Dragons appear, we skip to a world decimated by them, and then we see the possible turning point.
Entertaining enough, but it just sort of happens.
