Opinion – Metal Gear Survive

If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know I’ve always been pretty keen on the Metal Gear series.

I ranked the main series when I reviewed Ground Zeroes (I really need to update that).

Then there was the time I interviewed the voice of Meryl, Debi Mae West. She was awesome.

It’s been a big part of my gaming and writing life for a long time now. But following MGSV, which was to say the least a mixed experience, Hideo Kojima left Konami. With that game not ending the way many would have preferred any news of a new ‘Metal Gear’ was sure to be met with skepticism from most quarters.

First off, crouch down and peek around the corner at this new trailer for Metal Gear Survive.

Kojima’s absence has clearly not stopped Konami from doing weird shit. This is quite a departure. On first glance it’s not exactly a return to form. But let’s think about it for a second.

  • It’s set in an alternate dimension, so it doesn’t change anything.
  • The series has branched out before, notably with Metal Gear Rising, so this isn’t unprecedented.
  • It uses the FOX engine, which was one of MGSV’s biggest plus points.
  • MGSV’s main issue was the story, which had a lot to do with Kojima, who now isn’t around.
  • It doesn’t have ‘Solid’ in the title, so if you really had trouble you could ignore it like you did Revengeance (what a word).

I’m not completely turned off by this, despite a friend of mine describing it as ‘Resident Gear Evil 6’. The co-op aspect doesn’t really float my boat but the series’s gameplay took a massive jump up with MGSV; carry that over and you’ve got a solid base. Then it’s just a matter of how the story, characters and whatever new features they add work out…

OK, so there is stuff to worry about. It’s just not time to get out the pitchforks and raid Konami HQ just yet. When was the last time a Konami trailer was straightforward anyway? The game could be completely different by the time we get it. Just think of MGS2…

I keep ending on a negative note! I don’t mean to. Sure it could be horrible but with the way this is set up it does no harm. The MGS series already has psychics, Shamans and tentacled mech suits. Is this really much weirder? If it’s terrible it will flop and maybe Konami will have to rethink things. If it’s great then happy days. Let’s just give it a chance for now instead of getting all hyperbolic.

I’m predisposed to optimism, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.
