My Bloody Valentine

Sat on the sofa late at night, but not yet ready to go bed, I came across this gem.

My wife and I are avid viewers of Supernatural, which stars the almost impossibly good looking Jensen Ackles. I wondered how he’d come across in a feature film, as well how the 3D moments would across on my normal TV.

Turns out neither come out of it well, in a film that doesn’t really have that much to do with Valentine’s Day!

My god Jensen that was terrible. How can you be hammy and wooden at the same time!? The rest of the cast were entirely serviceable in a horror film way, but with him being the only guy I really knew it rather put the spotlight on him. I would say it really shows the gulf between being good on TV and being good on the big screen, but Ackles’s co-star on Supernatural, Jared Padalecki, fared far better in the reboot of Friday the 13th. Was it the script? Was it just a pay cheque? I don’t know. But it wasn’t good.

The 3D was similarly poor, with it going for the really obvious ‘pick axe at the screen!’ move on several occasions. Even in 2D each one was obvious. No clever use of depth, just boom! At least it was quite gory.

In its defence, there were plenty of kills peppered throughout, and the obligatory twist wasn’t completely expected. As late night fodder it’s fine. Some horror fans may even quite like it. I just found it rather forgettable.
