In the course of writing this review I’ve had a mini-revelation regarding Man Up. At first I was frustrated with how this anti-rom-com turns to well-worn tropes in its third act.
But I realise now that I was missing the point. I think the film is saying that despite all our cynicism, sometimes there’s a place for hopeless romanticism. That’s something I can get behind.
Bell and Pegg’s chemistry is wonderful; it’s entertaining watching these relatively normal characters overcome the mistakes they keep making.
Much like The DUFF earlier this year, tried and tested doesn’t mean bad. Far from it.
