Though it lacks any real bite, Universal’s needless rewriting of the Dracula mythos is nonetheless a perfectly OK distraction for ninety minutes.
Evans makes for a convincingly troubled hero, all furrowed brow and quietly commanding tones, and holds everything together valiantly. The sets and costumes are beautiful, which helped take my mind off some of the less than convincing casting (looking at you Dominic Cooper). With some grisly deaths and a simply told but solid story you could do far worse. The ending feels (and was) tacked on but at least it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Decent Friday night fodder.
